Podiatry Surgical Textbooks: The Five Best

These are the five best Podiatric Surgical textbooks for a resident or student.  These are placed in order.  There are variation of opinion.  I rate them in their ability to prepare a resident or student for surgery and questions they will encounter during the surgery.  Most of these books are available on Kindle or to rent for low prices.

5. Surgical Exposures of the Foot and Ankle: The Anatomic Approach:  This textbook approaches surgery through an anatomical approach for the Podiatric exposure.  This book highlights anatomical landmarks in Podiatric surgical cases.  The book also presents common anatomic pitfalls in surgery and dangerous complications that can result of poor anatomical approach.  It is available in Kindle format and hardcover.

4. Surgery of the Foot and Ankle by Coughlin— This is considered by many foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons as the definitive textbook on Foot and Ankle Surgery.  This book and DVD have been updated and contains many of the leading techniques currently used by Foot and Ankle surgeons.  Additionally, the DVD provides video of 59 procedures.

3. Foot and Ankle (The Orthopedic essentials) This book is concised and created with foot and ankle orthopedic residents in mind.  If you are looking for an inexpensive reference book before beginning a Podiatric clerkship or residency,  this is the book for you. From biomechanics to lower extremity, this book has it all.

2.  Master Techniques in Orthopedic Surgery The Foot and Ankle Essentials–  This is the best book to teach you how to do surgery.  This book will not include a lot of “pimp” question answers.  But this book will include brilliant pictures and step by step instructions on how to perform and become an elite foot and ankle surgeon.

1. McGlamry’s Foot and Ankle Textbook of Surgery– Whatever one thinks of this book is fine.  This is the book that most Podiatric surgeons, residency directors and clerkship directors consider the bible.  This is the book most of the pimp questions and surgical procedures will be drawn from.  If you plan on being a Podiatric surgeon, this is the one book you need to own a copy of.
