Best Foot and Ankle Surgery Books Rated

What are the best textbooks for foot and ankle surgery? There are so many available, but which are the best?  There is not a definitive best one. It depends on what type of surgery book you are looking for.  Are you looking for a book about how to perform an operation, or do you want a textbook with studies and results and literature citations on particular operations?  Below I have listed what I believe to be the best text books for foot and ankle surgery.

Master Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery: The Foot and Ankle:  This book’s strength is its pictures and instructions on how to perform foot and ankle surgery.  It will be light on indications and reasons for procedures.  But if you are looking for a textbook on how to do specific operations, this is a book to consider.  The graphics and photographs are top notch, and you will have a great deal of confidence going into a specific case after reading about it in this book.  I highly recommend this book for a surgical resident who is performing foot and ankle operations.

Operative Techniques of Foot and Ankle Surgery Book, Website and DVD–  if you want a more multi media presentation of how to perform operations this is a textbook to consider.  Again, this book and website feature high definition pictures and interactions with actual videos on how to perform a great deal of the operations.  Similar to Master Techniques it is more a function of what way you prefer to learn.  I would choose one between Master Techniques and Operative Techniques that is no need to have both.

Surgical Exposure in the Foot and Ankle Anatomical Approach–  This textbook approaches foot and ankle surgery from the anatomy perspective and if you have ever been in surgery with an attending, you know the most common pimp questions you are asked are anatomy related.  Suffice it to say you cannot do surgery without knowing anatomy.  If you are uncomfortable or lack confidence with anatomy, this may be a textbook to consider.

Mann’s Surgery of the Foot and Ankle 2 Volume Set DVD/Website–  This book has it all: studies, indications, anatomy how to.  This textbook goes into fine detail and covers most any surgery performed in the foot and ankle.  It is highly thought of in the foot and ankle orthopedic surgery area, and if you are looking for a foot and ankle surgery fellowship this is a book you need to have.  If you are looking for a book that has it all and is updated this maybe the book for you.

McGlamarys Comprehenisve Textbook of Surgery 2 Volume Set– This book is the bible of Podiatric foot and ankle surgery.  No serious Podiatric surgeon would be without one.  If you are a Podiatric student or resident this is the one book you need to have for both school and residency.  This book goes into fine detail cover foot and ankle surgery from both the Podiatric and Orthopedic perspective.  Essentially, this is the Podiatric answer to Mann.
